The Lead Manufacturing Engineer – Machining leads the development, execution, and launch of machining processes and equipment from concept through plant handover. This role ensures safety, quality, cost, timing, and manufacturing capability targets are achieved while delivering robust machining systems aligned with standards.
The position works cross-functionally with Product Engineering, Plant Engineering, Controls, Quality, Operations, OEMs, integration suppliers, and launch execution teams. The ideal candidate demonstrates creativity, initiative, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
What You’ll Do
- Perform safety reviews, Safety Observation Tours, and ergonomic assessments for new and modified machining processes.
- Develop and maintain process flow diagrams, routings, and sequence-of-operations documentation.
- Translate process requirements into Statements of Requirements for machine tools, fixtures, gaging, cutting tools, and automation.
- Define error-proofing, nonconforming-product, backup, and process-control strategies.
- Lead PFMEA and Control Plan development with cross-functional teams.
- Support capability studies, type studies, error-proofing validation, and dimensional performance activities.
- Lead machining scope from concept through installation, equipment run-off, launch, and plant handover.
- Own crankshaft machining scope, while also supporting sustainment and capacity improvements for block and head machining.
- Manage OEMs and suppliers through design, build, debug, and run-off activities.
- Develop and maintain Launch Wall and Master Dot timing.
- Ensure equipment meets throughput, quality, safety, ergonomic, and manufacturing capability requirements.
- Forecast spending and manage Shopping Carts and invoicing.
- Support asset-tracking activities, including Brass Tags, METLs, and SPS1Bs.
- Provide regular program updates covering timing, risks, issues, and launch readiness.
- Maintain the program issues list and drive timely closure.
- Capture, share, and implement lessons learned across programs and sites.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Electrical Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
- At least seven years of manufacturing or manufacturing engineering experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently execute projects across block, head, and crankshaft machining.
- Experience leading machining processing, execution, and launch activities, particularly crankshaft machining.
- Strong understanding of crankshaft processes, equipment, OEMs, tooling, and gaging.
- Experience launching crankshaft machining lines or cells.
- Experience overseeing service engineers, junior engineers, and OEM partners.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, communication, and project execution skills.
- Working knowledge of lean manufacturing and Manufacturing System principles.
